In short: Formed in 1988, Pennywise emerged from the Hermosa Beach scene to become a pillar of melodic hardcore. Despite the devastating loss of their original bassist in 1996, the group maintained a relentless touring schedule and a commitment to their core philosophy of positive mental attitude for over three decades.

Pennywise began as a local project in Hermosa Beach, California, founded by Fletcher Dragge, Jason Thirsk, Keith Brown, and Hank Jacobson. Originally performing under the name P.M.A.—standing for Positive Mental Attitude—the band quickly became a fixture of the regional punk scene. Their early sound, which eventually earned them a reputation as pioneers of skate punk, focused on progressive social themes and an optimistic outlook, a message they carried through their debut self-titled album in 1991.

The band's trajectory shifted significantly in the mid-1990s. Their 1995 album, About Time, marked their first entry onto the Billboard 200, signaling a broader commercial breakthrough. However, the group faced a profound personal crisis in 1996 when original bassist Jason Thirsk, who had been struggling with alcoholism, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In the wake of this tragedy, the band channeled their grief into their music, dedicating their 1997 album, Full Circle, to his memory and re-recording their anthem, Bro-Hymn, as a tribute to their fallen friend.

Throughout their history, Pennywise has navigated significant lineup changes while maintaining a consistent output. Vocalist Jim Lindberg left the group in 2009, leading to a brief tenure by Zoli Téglás, before Lindberg returned in 2012. The band has continued to evolve, releasing twelve studio albums and exploring new distribution models, such as offering their 2008 album, Reason to Believe, as a free digital download. Today, they remain active, with their work recognized by critics as influential within the pop-punk genre, securing their place in the history of American independent music.
