A broken alliance between a king and a duke ignited fifteen years of war.
The friendship between Holy Roman Emperor Henry II and Polish ruler Bolesław I the Brave dissolved into a series of brutal conflicts from 1003 to 1018. Triggered by a succession crisis and a failed assassination attempt, these wars reshaped the borders of Central Europe through shifting allegiances and territorial disputes.
The conflict originated in the power vacuum following the sudden death of Emperor Otto III in January 1002. Bolesław I the Brave, initially an ally of the Ottonian dynasty, found himself at odds with the newly elected Henry II. Tensions escalated after Bolesław survived an assassination attempt in Merseburg, which he blamed on the German court. Although the chronicler Thietmar of Merseburg denied royal involvement, the incident shattered the trust established at the 1000 Congress of Gniezno.
The struggle was defined by three distinct campaigns between 1003 and 1018. Bolesław’s intervention in the Bohemian succession crisis—where he briefly installed and then blinded the duke Boleslaus III—drew Henry II into the fray. Henry’s decision to forge an alliance with the pagan Lutici tribes against the Christian Polish state caused significant friction with his own Saxon nobility, who viewed the partnership with deep skepticism. Throughout the wars, Bolesław demonstrated remarkable resilience, successfully defending his borders at Krosno in 1015 and holding the city of Niemcza against an imperial siege in 1017.
The fighting concluded with the 1018 Peace of Bautzen, brokered by high-ranking clergy and nobles. The treaty solidified Bolesław’s control over eastern Lusatia and the Milceni lands, though the exact nature of his sovereignty—whether as an imperial fief or an independent territory—remains a subject of historical debate. Bohemia ultimately remained under the control of the Holy Roman Empire. The resolution was cemented by Bolesław’s marriage to Oda of Meissen, marking the end of a volatile era that fundamentally altered the political landscape of the region.
