The diplomat who negotiated for an infant queen and survived a fall from grace
In short: To coordinate a wedding uniting Prince of Wales with baby Mary, Queen of Scots, Ralph Sadler journeyed into Scotland during 1543. He was a man who navigated the deadliest corridors of Tudor power—surviving the execution of his mentor, Thomas Cromwell, and the rise and fall of four different monarchs.
Sadler's career was defined by extreme proximity to the throne. Raised in the household of Thomas Cromwell, he became one of the most trusted friends and executors of Cromwell's will. However, this loyalty proved perilous; following Cromwell’s execution in 1540, Sadler was arrested and sent to the Tower of London on January 18, 1541. He managed to clear his name within days, a feat that allowed him to remain a central figure in Henry VIII's government for decades.
His diplomatic portfolio was dominated by Anglo-Scottish relations. In 1537, he successfully investigated complaints against the Lord Methven and met James V of Scotland at Rouen. By 1543, his role became more intimate: negotiating a marriage between Mary, Queen of Scots, and Edward, Prince of Wales. Sadler famously described the infant queen as "as goodly a child I have seen" after being shown to her by her nurse in Linlithgow Palace. Despite his efforts to solidify an alliance, the Treaty of Greenwich failed, leading to open warfare.
Sadler's political survival was remarkable. He served under Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I. While he was a radical Protestant who signed the 1553 device settling the crown on Jane Grey, he was forced into semi-retirement during Mary I's Catholic reign after being briefly held under house arrest in 1553. He was eventually restored to favor by Elizabeth I, serving as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and helping architect the Treaty of Edinburgh following the Battle of Leith.
