The Republic F-105 Thunderchief was a massive, Mach 2 fighter-bomber nicknamed the Thud.
In short: Designed to deliver nuclear weapons at supersonic speeds, this gargantuan aircraft became the workhorse of the Vietnam War. Despite its troubled development and uncomplimentary nicknames, it evolved into a specialized hunter of enemy missile sites, earning a reputation for resilience and power that eventually commanded the respect of its pilots.
Conceived in 1951 by Alexander Kartveli at Republic Aviation, the F-105 Thunderchief was originally intended for high-speed, low-altitude nuclear strikes. When it entered service in 1958, it stood as the largest single-seat, single-engine combat plane ever built, with a maximum weight of roughly 50,000 pounds. Its design prioritized supersonic performance and a heavy internal payload over traditional agility, leading to a unique aesthetic featuring a wasp-waist fuselage and forward-swept air intakes.
The aircraft's transition from a nuclear platform to a conventional bomber during the Vietnam War revealed significant design limitations. It lacked self-sealing fuel tanks and featured a complex, fragile hydraulics system, contributing to high combat loss rates. By the end of its production in 1964, 833 units had been completed. Of these, 382 were lost, including 62 non-combat incidents. It remains the only American aircraft withdrawn from combat specifically due to these high attrition levels.
Despite these challenges, the F-105 found a vital niche as a Wild Weasel platform. Two-seat F-105F and F-105G variants were outfitted with specialized electronics to suppress Soviet-built S-75 Dvina surface-to-air missiles. These crews, often the first to enter and last to leave a combat zone, were instrumental in protecting strike forces. Two pilots earned the Medal of Honor for their bravery in these dangerous missions, cementing the aircraft's legacy as a formidable, if flawed, combat veteran that served until 1984.
