The rapid-response mechanics of the Rhodesian Bush War's elite 'Fireforce'
In short: In the dense bush of Southern Rhodesia, survival depended on a highly technical, multi-wave aerial assault. Known as the 'Fireforce,' this rapid-response system used helicopters, paratroopers, and light aircraft to trap insurgents. It was a sophisticated, high-stakes game of precision, intelligence, and sudden, overwhelming force.
The Rhodesian Light Infantry (RLI), nicknamed 'The Saints,' operated as a primary counter-insurgency force during the Bush War. Their signature tactic, the Fireforce, was a technical, multi-layered assault designed to react instantly to enemy sightings. The operation typically comprised a 'First Wave' of 32 soldiers. This included three helicopters—one 'K-car' acting as a command and gun platform, and two 'G-cars' for troop transport—alongside a DC-3 Dakota carrying paratroopers, and a Cessna Skymaster for air support.
The mechanics of the assault relied on strict organization. The G-cars carried 'Stops' (or 'Sticks'), each a four-man unit consisting of a leader, a machine-gunner, and two riflemen. While the heliborne troops provided the immediate strike, the 'Second Wave' (Landtail) followed in trucks to provide logistics, such as refueling and recovering equipment. The effectiveness of these engagements often hinged on the intelligence provided by the Selous Scouts, who could insert observation posts undetected.
Despite the unit's combat reputation, the RLI's work was not solely aerial. Commandos also conducted grueling, long-range patrols in Rhodesia, Zambia, and Mozambique, often carrying over 45 kg of equipment for up to ten days. While these patrols were physically exhausting and sometimes lacked the intense action of Fireforce operations, they were essential for reconnaissance and ambush. The regiment's history concluded in October 1980, following the transition to the new government of Zimbabwe.
