How one defiant elder’s final words doomed a city during the Eastern Han dynasty
In 213, warlord Ma Chao besieged Jicheng, the last holdout in Longxi. Despite a desperate defense led by Yang Fu, the city’s leadership crumbled after a captured messenger chose execution over betrayal. This pivotal moment shifted control of Liang Province, setting off a volatile chain of shifting alliances and brutal retribution.
Following his defeat at the Battle of Tong Pass in 211, Ma Chao retreated to regroup. By recruiting Qiang and Hu soldiers and securing aid from Zhang Lu, he systematically conquered the counties of Longxi. By 213, only Jicheng, the capital of Tianshui Commandery, remained outside his control. The siege proved grueling; Inspector Wei Kang and his assistant Yang Fu held the walls for eight months, even employing a crescent moon formation to repel the attackers while awaiting reinforcements from Cao Cao’s forces in Chang'an.
The turning point arrived when the messenger Yan Wen was captured while attempting to summon aid. Ma Chao attempted to use the elder to demoralize the defenders, but Yan Wen refused to betray his lord, famously declaring that a gentleman would rather die than live in shame. His subsequent execution shattered the resolve of Wei Kang and the local Administrator. Terrified, they opened the city gates, allowing Ma Chao to enter and immediately order the murder of the city's leadership.
Cao Cao, distracted by conflicts at Ruxukou and the establishment of his own principality, failed to send aid until the eighth month. By the time Xiahou Yuan arrived, the city had already fallen, and his relief force was defeated 200 li outside the walls. This victory bolstered Ma Chao’s standing, leading him to declare himself Governor of Bing Province. However, his control was fleeting; by the ninth month of 213, Yang Fu orchestrated a rebellion with former officers, forcing Ma Chao to flee to Zhang Lu.
The siege remains a significant episode in the power struggles of the late Eastern Han period, illustrating the fragility of regional control during the era. While Ma Chao briefly commanded the majority of Liang Province, the internal resistance he faced highlights the complex loyalties that defined the period, a narrative later immortalized in historical records and modern media like Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends.
