In short: From the Soviet Union to the jungles of Cambodia, the T-54/T-55 series is a global phenomenon. This armored icon has not just participated in wars, but has been repurposed as artillery, missile platforms, and even museum pieces across five decades of shifting geopolitical borders.

The T-54/T-55 series represents one of the most significant legacies of Soviet armored engineering. Its footprint is truly global, with service records spanning more than 50 nations. While the USSR was a primary supplier, the production of these vehicles was a massive international effort, with manufacturing occurring in the Soviet Union until 1981, Poland until 1979, Czechoslovakia until 1983, and China until 1985.

The distribution of these tanks often followed the flow of Soviet aid and second-hand transfers. For example, Cuba received 1,200 T-55s between 1964 and 1975, many of which remain in use today, sometimes repurposed as anti-aircraft platforms with SA-2 or SA-3 missiles. In Libya, the scale was even more immense; by 1986, the nation had approximately 2,200 T-55s in service. Meanwhile, in North Korea, the fleet grew to include over 3,500 various armored vehicles, including T-54s and T-55s, by 2006.

The lifecycle of these tanks is marked by constant modernization and reconfiguration. Variants like the T-55AM2 have been utilized by Slovakia and Cambodia, while Iran has upgraded 200 vehicles to the Safir-74 standard. Even as some nations like Iraq saw their massive fleets of 1,500 vehicles largely destroyed or scrapped, others like Angola and Ethiopia continued to integrate new batches of T-55Ms and T-55As from suppliers like Belarus and Bulgaria well into the late 1990s.

Beyond simple combat, the platform's versatility is evident in its diverse roles. In Azerbaijan, the tanks have served as indirect-fire platforms, and in Cuba, they function as artillery propellers. This adaptability has allowed the T-54/T-55 to remain a relevant, if aging, presence on the global stage for over half a century.
