In short: In October 2002, as the world braced for war, Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan proposed a bizarre solution: a literal duel between George W. Bush and Saddam Hussein. This high-ranking official navigated a life of military command, trade syndicates, and survival under the shadow of one of history's most notorious regimes.

Taha Yassin Ramadan was a cornerstone of the Iraqi Ba'athist regime, serving as Vice President from 1991 until the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003. Known as 'the man of major missions,' he balanced roles as a military commander and a high-level diplomat. Approximately 600,000 trained individuals comprised the People’s Army, a reserve militia tasked with defending the home front and aiding the regular army. While he was a key figure in Iraq's defense strategy, his influence was often balanced by his unwavering loyalty to Saddam, which prevented him from seeking independent power. Beyond the battlefield, Ramadan was a master of economic survival. He worked to diversify Iraq's alliances to bypass U.S. sanctions, signing free trade agreements with Jordan, Egypt, and Syria in 2000 and 2001. However, his methods were complex; while he officially sought to improve ties with nations like Russia and India, analysts also linked him to a 'Mafia-style crime syndicate' that managed illicit trade networks with France and Germany.

He consistently defended Iraq's economic health during the Iran-Iraq war, arguing that the nation's socialist approach allowed it to maintain infrastructure and stability despite the conflict. Ramadan's life ended in the same volatile atmosphere he helped manage. After being captured in Mosul in August 2003, he was tried by the Iraq Special Tribunal for his role in the Al-Dujail trial. Though initially sentenced to life imprisonment in November 2006, the appeals court demanded a harsher penalty. On February 12, 2007, he was sentenced to death by hanging, and his execution was carried out on March 20, 2007—the fourth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
