A reimagined Arthurian legend where magic is real and history is brutal
In short: Forget the polished myths of chivalry. This retelling of the Arthurian legends plunges into the Post-Roman Dark Age, where a banished warlord returns to a Britain fractured by Saxon invasions and a throne left to a child. It is a gritty, sprawling epic of survival and power.
Based on Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles trilogy, the series departs significantly from its source material to create a distinct television experience. While the novels are noted for their ambivalence toward supernatural elements, the adaptation features a Merlin who wields actual magic powers. Furthermore, the show streamlines the narrative into a singular timeline, removing the series of flashbacks and flash-forwards found in the books. It also shifts the perspective, moving away from Derfel Cadarn as the primary narrator and protagonist.
The production design emphasizes the harsh reality of the Dark Age. Filming spanned across Wales and the West Country, utilizing diverse locations including a 'rocky canyon' set made of polyurethane foam panels in Monmouthshire and a village constructed on the Blaise Castle Estate. The series depicts a Britain under siege, where Arthur Pendragon—the illegitimate son of King Uther—must navigate a landscape of pagan priestesses, Roman veterans like the Numidian Sagramor, and ruthless rival kings seeking to secure power through slaughter.
Despite its ambitious scope and 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the series faced a swift end. After premiering in late 2023 on MGM+ and ITVX, it was cancelled in September 2024 following its first season of 10 episodes. Critics noted that while it sacrificed some fidelity to Cornwell's prose, it succeeded as a sprawling, action-packed piece of historical fiction.
The series explores complex character dynamics, such as the relationship between Arthur and his half-sister Morgan, who is portrayed as an independent-minded pagan rather than the disfigured figure seen in the books. It balances these personal stakes against the macro-politics of the era, featuring three primary protectors of the antagonist Mordred, each representing different facets of the era's instability.
