Is China's property crisis spreading? Fantasia Holdings defaults on hundreds of millions in debt.
Following the high-profile struggles of Evergrande, another major Chinese developer has missed critical bond payments. This video examines the collapse of Fantasia Holdings and what it signals for the broader stability of China's massive real estate sector.
Fantasia Holdings, a developer specializing in luxury apartments based in Shenzhen, has triggered fresh market alarm after failing to meet its financial obligations. The company missed a bond payment of $205.7 million, contributing to a total of $315 million in missed payments to lenders. The situation escalated when Country Garden Services, the property management arm of China's second-largest developer, revealed that Fantasia also failed to repay a loan of approximately 700 million yuan, or $109 million.
In response to these developments, credit rating agencies S&P and Moody's downgraded Fantasia to default status. The company has warned that it likely faces broader defaults on its remaining external debts, leaving bondholders with poor prospects for recovery as the firm assesses the damage to its cash position.
