BTS started as a hedge against collapsing CD sales at a small Seoul label
Around 2010, Bang Si-hyuk of Big Hit Entertainment faced a squeeze: CD sales were falling and streaming did not yet pay enough to replace them. He bet that an idol group, with concerts and devoted fans, would bring steadier money. Three rappers who stayed through the auditions became the core of BTS, now South Korea's best-selling act.
Bang first wanted a hip hop crew built around RM, an underground rapper known in Seoul. When he pivoted to an idol format, many trainees walked away, but RM, Suga and J-Hope stayed. Bang broke with the drilled uniformity of rival groups and let members keep their personalities and shape the music, a freedom helped by Big Hit not being one of the three agencies that ruled K-pop. The seven lived together and rehearsed up to 15 hours a day.
Their 2013 debut, 2 Cool 4 Skool, sold modestly, yet its songs about teenagers crushed by parental and exam pressure stood out in an industry that avoided taboo topics. The name Bangtan Sonyeondan translates as Bulletproof Boy Scouts, which J-Hope explained as blocking the stereotypes and criticism fired at young people; in 2017 it gained a second reading, Beyond the Scene. Fans adopted the name A.R.M.Y. at an early fan meeting.
The rise was steep. Wings in 2016 became their first million-seller at home. In 2017 Mic Drop earned the first RIAA Gold certification for a Korean group, and Love Yourself: Tear made them the first South Korean act to top the Billboard 200. Dynamite reached the top of the Hot 100 in 2020, and a run of hits made them the fastest to six American number-one singles since the Beatles. As of 2023 they had sold more than 40 million albums, and Map of the Soul: 7 was the first album in the country to pass five million.
They sold out Wembley and the Rose Bowl, addressed the UN General Assembly three times and in 2018 became the youngest recipients of South Korea's Order of Cultural Merit. After pausing in 2022 so all seven could complete military service, they returned in 2026 with Arirang.
