The $1.44 billion takeover that split a global gaming brand
In short: In 2005, a massive corporate merger fundamentally reshaped the landscape of video game retail. While one name vanished from the American landscape, another survived through a complex web of franchise agreements and local brand recognition, creating a fragmented identity that persists to this day.
The evolution of EB Games (originally Electronics Boutique) began in 1977 in Philadelphia. Founded by James Kim, the company initially sold calculators and digital watches before pivoting to computers and software in the mid-1990s. It wasn't until the mid-90s that the focus shifted toward TV-based video games and consoles. By 2002, the company unified its branding under the EB Games name, while also operating under the 'EB World' and 'Games 'n Gadgets' banners.
In October 2005, a pivotal $1.44 billion takeover deal saw GameStop Corp. acquire EB Games. This deal included a 34.2% premium on EB Games stock, offering shareholders $38.15 in cash plus approximately 3/4 of a GameStop share for every EB Games share. Following the acquisition, GameStop phased out the EB name in the United States, rebranding all American outlets to GameStop. However, the EB name survived in Australia and Canada due to strong local brand recognition, continuing to operate under franchise agreements from GameStop.
The brand's history is marked by aggressive expansion and strategic retreats. It expanded into the UK in 1995 by purchasing a 25% stake in The Rhino Group, and later acquired the 'Game' brand for £99 million in 1999. While it successfully dominated the UK market as 'The Game Group,' its international footprint has contracted significantly. In 2026, EB Games announced the closure of its New Zealand operations following a full-year loss of $11.5 million, while its Canadian assets were sold to a private businessman, leading to a reversion of the brand name in the near future.
