The album that was born from a 'dysfunctional democracy' of noise
In short: Garbage didn't just want to make a record; they wanted to translate the 'remix sensibility' into a live band setup. By layering punk, funk, and techno into a 'Wall of Sound' process, they created a dizzying soundscape that critics compared to a Jackson Pollock painting—thick layers of noise stripped down and pasted back together.
The band's identity was forged in the studio. Producers Butch Vig and Steve Marker, who founded Smart Studios in 1983, were looking to move away from 'really long' records and straightforward punk. They sought to create a 'melting pot' of genres, incorporating elements of hip hop and jungle rhythms. The band's name itself was an inside joke; it was inspired by an early comment that their experimental work sounded 'like garbage.'
Their creative process was described by Vig as a 'dysfunctional democracy.' The band would take a single loop or sample, find one 'cool' bar, and jam until the original idea was often completely mutated into something different.
This 'more is more' philosophy resulted in a production style that balanced 'menacing sexuality' with 'swanky pop hooks.' Lead singer Shirley Manson played a pivotal role in refining this, rewriting lyrics to be more subtle and 'poppy' while maintaining a dark, 'creepy' undercurrent that explored themes of voyeurism, hedonism, and self-destruction.
Despite its polished, 'glossy' production, the album was a commercial and critical success. The record hit a high of 20 on the Billboard 200 in America, while climbing to six in Britain. However, the technical history of the album is fraught with mystery: in 2007, the original analog masters were discovered to be missing. Engineers had to reverse-engineer the music from damaged, incomplete 16-bit safety DAT mixes to complete the 20th-anniversary reissue.
