Why your birthright matters more than your grit in building wealth

Darrick Hamilton: How "baby bonds" could help close the wealth gap · 12:44 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: We are taught that success is a byproduct of hard work and resilience. However, economists argue that economic security is often predetermined by the wealth position you inherit at birth. Without initial capital, inequality becomes locked in, making it nearly impossible for some to compete regardless of their effort.

The core issue lies in the distinction between income and wealth. While policies like Social Security or the Earned Income Tax Credit have become accepted tools for redistributing income, wealth remains a less-addressed policy priority. This is significant because freedom is not just the absence of state coercion; it is also the ability to choose one's own ends and purposes—a capability dictated by available resources.

The racial wealth gap in the United States provides a stark illustration of this disparity. According to 2016 data cited by Brookings, the net worth of a typical white family was $171,000, which is ten times greater than the $17,150 held by a typical Black family. A primary driver of this gap is neighborhood segregation and the resulting disparity in home values. Across numerous urban regions, properties situated within districts comprising 50 percent Black inhabitants cost approximately 50 percent less than dwellings located where zero Black people live.

To address these systemic barriers, economist Darrick Hamilton proposes 'baby bonds.' These would be trust accounts for every newborn, providing up to $60,000 in personal seed money. Crucially, these amounts would be calibrated based on a family's existing wealth. The goal is to provide children with the capital necessary for life-changing milestones—such as attending college, purchasing a home, or starting a business—thereby breaking the cycle where wealth acts as both the beginning and the end of economic security.
