Hugo Boss made Nazi uniforms but did not design the black SS outfit
A popular story says the fashion house Hugo Boss designed the SS uniform. It did not: that black outfit was drawn up in 1932 by two SS members, the artist Karl Diebitsch and graphic designer Walter Heck. The company's real history is still grim. It manufactured those uniforms, and during the war used forced labour.
Hugo Ferdinand Boss took over his parents' clothing shop in Metzingen after the First World War and in 1924 opened a small factory making shirts, workwear and raincoats. The Depression hit hard. In 1931 he joined the Nazi Party and became a sponsoring member of the SS, and orders for party uniforms followed, stabilising the business. By 1938 it was focused on Wehrmacht uniforms, and later made them for the Waffen-SS as well.
During the war the firm had about 300 regular staff plus 140 forced labourers, mostly women from the Soviet Union and Poland, and for a few months dozens of French prisoners of war. A 1946 tribunal judged Boss an activist and beneficiary of the regime, stripped his voting and business rights and fined him heavily, though on appeal he was reclassified as a mere follower. He died in 1948. Decades later the company paid into a German industry fund compensating forced labourers, backed an independent historical study published in 2011, and issued a statement of profound regret.
The postwar turn began with uniforms for postal workers, railways and police, then in 1950 a first order for men's suits. Under Boss's grandsons, Jochen and Uwe Holy, the company launched Boss-branded suits in 1970, opened a factory outlet that grew into Outletcity Metzingen, registered the Boss trademark and went into Formula One sponsorship. A fragrance in 1984 helped it list on the Frankfurt exchange the next year.
Owners changed repeatedly, from a Japanese group to Italy's Marzotto and the investor Permira. Womenswear arrived in 1998, and by 2025 sales had reached about €4.3 billion.
