Apple finally enters the foldable market with the dual-screen iPhone Duo
After years of patent filings and industry speculation, Apple has launched the iPhone Duo. This foldable device marks a significant shift in the company's hardware strategy, blending the portability of a smartphone with the expansive workspace of an iPad. It is a bold move into a competitive, high-stakes category.
The journey to the iPhone Duo began long before its September 9, 2026, unveiling. Apple started filing patents for flexible displays as early as 2011, with concepts for book-style and clamshell folding mechanisms appearing by 2016. While early rumors suggested a 2020 production target, the project evolved significantly under the guidance of leadership, who recognized the growing demand for foldable devices among Asian consumers. By early 2025, Apple had begun securing suppliers for specialized ultra-thin glass and OLED panels, eventually settling on a book-style design that unfolds into a 7.6-inch internal display.
Technically, the device is a departure from standard iPhone architecture. It runs on the 2 nm A20 Pro chip, supported by a vapor-chamber cooling system to manage the demands of its dual-screen interface. The software, iOS 27.1, was specifically redesigned to handle the folding form factor, introducing iPad-inspired multitasking and a dynamic interface that adjusts based on the hinge angle. Notably, the device supports the Apple Pencil, a feature that reverses the company's long-standing historical rejection of styluses on smartphones.
Despite the innovation, the path to market was not without friction. Reports indicated that production faced early hurdles, with output ramping up slowly to only a few hundred units per day by late August 2026. Financial analysts have also expressed caution regarding the device's long-term value retention, with projections suggesting a significant depreciation within the first year. Nevertheless, with a release scheduled for October 23, 2026, in approximately 70 countries, the iPhone Duo represents Apple's most ambitious attempt to redefine the smartphone's physical boundaries.
