The father who paved the way for a four-time world champion
In short: Before Max Verstappen became a global icon, his father Jos was already carving out a legacy in the high-stakes world of Formula One. From podium finishes to pioneering Dutch racing, Jos's career serves as the foundational blueprint for one of the most successful sporting dynasties in modern history.
Jos Verstappen's racing pedigree began in Dutch Limburg, where he started karting at age eight. He achieved significant early success, becoming a Dutch junior champion in 1984 and a two-class Karting European Champion in 1989. This feat of dominance remained unmatched until his son, Max, achieved a similar milestone in 2013. His transition to car racing in 1991 saw him quickly rise through the ranks, winning the Benelux Championship in 1992 and the German Formula 3 championship in 1993.
Verstappen entered Formula One in 1994, making history as the first Dutch driver to score a podium finish. His rookie season was marked by high-profile moments, including a dramatic fire incident at the German Grand Prix where a fuel leak engulfed his car. Despite facing various team changes and technical hurdles—including a stint with the bankrupt Simtek team in 1995—Verstappen competed in 107 Grands Prix. While he scored 17 points under the original system (equivalent to 117 in the modern era), his experience provided the critical infrastructure for his son's career.
Since 2002, Jos has managed and coached Max from an early age in karting. While Max has since surpassed his father's statistics, Jos's career provided the essential transition from junior formulae to the pinnacle of motorsport. Jos secured victories in the LMP2 category during 2008, claiming both the Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans after his 2003 Formula One exit. His journey illustrates a multi-generational mastery of racing mechanics and the intense pressure of professional sports management.
