MacKenzie Scott is rewriting the rules of modern philanthropy through radical, trust-based giving
Beyond her role as an early Amazon contributor and novelist, MacKenzie Scott has become one of history's most significant philanthropists. By distributing over $26 billion through her Yield Giving vehicle, she is challenging traditional charitable models by prioritizing unrestricted, trust-based donations to community-led organizations rather than maintaining centralized control.
Born in 1970, MacKenzie Scott’s path to global influence began at Princeton, where she studied creative writing under Toni Morrison. After working at the hedge fund D. E. Shaw, she moved to Seattle in 1994 to help Jeff Bezos launch Amazon. Her early contributions were foundational, spanning the company's business plan, accounting, and the negotiation of its first freight contract. However, Scott eventually stepped back from the corporate world to focus on her family and literary career, publishing two novels, The Testing of Luther Albright and Traps.
Following her 2019 divorce, which left her with a significant stake in Amazon, Scott committed to the Giving Pledge. Her approach to wealth distribution is defined by the philosophy that value is added by relinquishing control. Unlike traditional foundations that often dictate how funds must be spent, Scott’s Yield Giving provides unrestricted capital to underserved institutions. This strategy has seen her donate $26.3 billion to over 1,600 organizations as of December 2025, including a notable 2024 initiative that distributed $640 million to 361 small nonprofits.
Scott’s methodology is not without scrutiny. In 2021, she faced public backlash for initially withholding details about her recipients, a move that prompted the creation of the Yield Giving database to ensure transparency. Beyond direct charity, she has recently begun directing her advisors to invest in for-profit entities that seek solutions to societal challenges. Whether through her serialized political thrillers or her massive philanthropic distributions, Scott continues to operate outside conventional expectations, consistently prioritizing impact over the traditional trappings of billionaire influence.
