The Rise and Fall of Thailand’s Youngest Prime Minister: A Dynasty’s Complex Legacy
Paetongtarn Shinawatra made history as Thailand's youngest prime minister and the first child of a former leader to hold the office. Yet, her tenure was short-lived, defined by ambitious economic mega-projects, a controversial digital wallet scheme, and a leaked private phone call that ultimately triggered her removal from power.
Born into Thailand's prominent Shinawatra family in 1986, Paetongtarn entered politics after a career in business, where she held significant stakes in 21 companies valued at approximately ฿68 billion. Her political ascent was rapid; she was elected leader of the Pheu Thai Party in October 2023 and became prime minister in August 2024 following the removal of her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin. Her administration immediately pursued an aggressive economic agenda, including a 500-billion-baht digital wallet stimulus, the legalization of entertainment complexes featuring casinos, and the 1-trillion-baht Southern Land Bridge project designed to bypass the Strait of Malacca.
However, her premiership faced intense scrutiny regarding her autonomy, with critics alleging she was a proxy for her father, Thaksin Shinawatra. Tensions escalated in mid-2025 during a border conflict with Cambodia. In an attempt to de-escalate, Paetongtarn engaged in informal diplomacy with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen. A leaked recording of this private call, in which she addressed Hun Sen as 'uncle' and criticized a Thai military commander, sparked public outrage. Opponents accused her of compromising national dignity, leading to the withdrawal of the Bhumjaithai Party from her coalition.
The fallout culminated in a legal challenge from 36 senators, who accused her of ethical breaches. On 1 July 2025, the Constitutional Court suspended her from office. By 29 August 2025, the court ruled 6–3 against her, officially removing her from the premiership. Despite her subsequent appointment as Minister of Culture in the interim cabinet, her time as leader remains a case study in the volatility of Thai politics, where personal dynastic ties, military relations, and economic ambition collide in a high-stakes environment.
