From a niche CBS portal to a global streaming powerhouse, how Paramount+ evolved

Launched in 2014 as a simple digital home for CBS reruns, Paramount+ has transformed into a massive, multi-brand streaming giant. Through strategic mergers, aggressive sports acquisitions, and the consolidation of legacy media libraries, it has navigated a complex path to reach over 81 million paid global subscribers.

Originally debuting as CBS All Access in October 2014, the service was the first over-the-top offering from an American broadcast network. It initially focused on providing live streams of local CBS affiliates and on-demand access to the network's library. The platform's growth trajectory shifted significantly in 2017 with the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery, which drove record-breaking subscriber sign-ups. This momentum, bolstered by live sports like the NFL, solidified the service's viability as a standalone digital product.

The service underwent a major evolution following the 2019 merger of CBS Corporation and Viacom. By March 2021, it rebranded as Paramount+, positioning itself as the flagship streaming venture for the combined company. This transition integrated vast content libraries from brands including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, and Paramount Pictures. The strategy was to create a comprehensive house-of-brands model, eventually bundling Showtime content and phasing out standalone apps for individual networks to funnel users into the central Paramount+ ecosystem.

Recent years have seen the platform navigate further corporate restructuring. Following the 2025 merger of Paramount Global and Skydance Media, the new Paramount Skydance Corporation has pursued ambitious growth, including securing exclusive U.S. broadcast rights to the UFC for an estimated $7.7 billion. Furthermore, following a successful bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery in 2026, the company announced plans to merge Paramount+ with HBO Max. This consolidation aims to create a unified streaming powerhouse with a target of exceeding 200 million subscribers, marking a definitive shift from the service's humble origins as a localized broadcast supplement.
