From PayPal to Palantir, how Peter Thiel built a Silicon Valley empire on provocation.

Peter Thiel is a central figure in modern technology, known for co-founding PayPal and becoming Facebook's first outside investor. Beyond his financial success, he has cultivated a reputation as an intellectual architect of Silicon Valley, using provocative strategies and Tolkien-inspired branding to shape the industry's most influential and controversial companies.

Born in 1967 in Frankfurt, Thiel’s early life was marked by an itinerant upbringing that included time in apartheid-era Namibia. This experience, particularly a strict German-language school, reportedly fostered a lifelong distaste for uniformity. At Stanford, he founded The Stanford Review, establishing a career-long strategy of using provocative verbal cues to attract talent and build networks. This approach helped him identify and back ventures that would later define the tech landscape.

Thiel’s venture career took off with the 1998 founding of Confinity, which launched PayPal. After selling the company to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002, he turned his attention to high-stakes investing and data analysis. He launched Palantir in 2003, a company built on anti-fraud technology that has since become a cornerstone of defense and intelligence infrastructure. His investment in Facebook in 2004, where he provided $500,000 for a 10.2% stake, remains one of the most successful angel bets in history, netting him over $1 billion by 2012.

Through his Founders Fund, established in 2005, Thiel has pivoted toward 'hard tech' and national security, backing companies like SpaceX, Anduril, and various AI startups. The fund, nicknamed 'the Precious' by his inner circle, reflects his deep affinity for J.R.R. Tolkien’s works. Today, his influence extends into defense, space medicine, and decentralized AI, as he continues to invest in projects that he believes will take civilization to the next level, often while navigating intense public scrutiny regarding surveillance and his own political activities.
