In short: Researchers analyzing 148 scenarios across 39 sources found that certain lifestyle choices in developed countries have a far greater potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions than commonly promoted habits. While many people focus on recycling or changing lightbulbs, the study identified much more effective individual actions, such as avoiding air travel or adopting a plant-based diet.

The study calculated the potential emissions savings of various lifestyle choices in developed countries. It found that having one fewer child, living car-free, avoiding transatlantic flights, and eating plant-based diets are among the most impactful actions. However, the researchers noted that high school science textbooks and government resources in several countries largely overlook these high-impact strategies, focusing instead on much smaller, incremental changes.

Why it matters: The most effective ways to reduce your personal carbon footprint are often the ones least discussed in schools and government guides.
