Can a diverse group of emerging powers truly challenge Western financial dominance?

Once a mere economic label for fast-growing nations, BRICS has transformed into a formal intergovernmental organization. As new members join, the bloc aims to counterbalance institutions like the IMF, but deep political and economic fractures threaten to undermine its global ambitions.

The BRICS acronym originated from the term 'BRIC,' coined by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neill to identify Brazil, Russia, India, and China—four economies poised to dominate the global landscape by 2050. Since their first informal meeting at the 2006 United Nations General Assembly, the group has evolved from an economic descriptor into a structured intergovernmental organization. In 2011, the addition of South Africa shifted the focus toward a more inclusive assembly of regional leaders.

The alliance's primary geopolitical mission is to create a multipolar world order. At their 2009 summit, members expressed a commitment to noninterventionism and even called for a new global reserve currency to serve as an alternative to the U.S. dollar. To facilitate development in emerging economies, the group established the New Development Bank (NDB) in July 2014. The founding members pooled $100 billion in authorized capital, with each original member holding an equal stake in the institution.

The bloc is currently undergoing significant expansion. Following the 2023 summit in South Africa, several nations were announced as new members, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. While Argentina was initially included, President Javier Milei later announced the country would not join. However, the organization's future remains a subject of intense debate. Critics point to the vast differences in political systems and economic dependencies among members as evidence of potential fragility, questioning whether such a diverse group can maintain genuine cohesion.
