How a Luxembourg radio pioneer evolved into a European media powerhouse

Tracing its roots to a 1931 private broadcaster, RTL Group has transformed from a niche radio operator into a massive media conglomerate. Today, it dominates European television, streaming, and content production, acting as a strategic bulwark against the overwhelming influence of Silicon Valley giants in the modern digital landscape.

The origins of RTL Group lie in the 1931 establishment of the Compagnie Luxembourgeoise de Radiodiffusion. Initially a radio pioneer, the company pivoted to television after the Second World War, rebranding as CLT in 1954. The modern structure emerged from a 2000 merger between Bertelsmann, Groupe Bruxelles Lambert, and Pearson plc, designed to consolidate European media assets and counter U.S. market dominance. Today, the group operates under the umbrella of Bertelsmann, which holds over 75% of its shares.

RTL Group’s operations are vast, spanning 52 television channels and 40 radio stations across Europe. Its core segments include RTL Deutschland, Groupe M6, and the global production powerhouse Fremantle, which creates content for major platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. In 2026, the group significantly expanded its German-speaking footprint by acquiring Sky Deutschland, a move that unified the RTL+, Sky, and Wow services under a single banner with approximately 12 million paying subscribers.

Despite its scale, the company faces ongoing challenges in a shifting media environment. Critics have frequently argued that RTL Group was slow to adapt to the streaming era. In response, leadership has pushed for the deregulation of European television markets, aiming to foster national streaming alternatives that can compete with global technology platforms. This strategy includes heavy investment in local streaming services and advertising technology, as the group seeks to maintain its relevance and profitability in an increasingly fragmented digital world.
