From Treasury Chief of Staff to Meta COO: The Architect of Facebook's Profitability

Sheryl Sandberg transformed Facebook from a cool site into a global advertising powerhouse. Her career spans the World Bank, Google, and the Meta boardroom, yet her legacy is defined as much by her polarizing leadership philosophy and high-profile advocacy as by her immense wealth and complex corporate controversies.

Born in 1969, Sheryl Sandberg’s trajectory through elite institutions began at Harvard, where she graduated summa cum laude in economics. Her early career was marked by a close mentorship with Lawrence Summers, serving as his research assistant at the World Bank and later as his chief of staff at the U.S. Treasury during the Asian financial crisis. After a stint at McKinsey & Company and a pivotal role at Google, where she scaled the sales team from four to 4,000, she joined Facebook in 2008 as its first COO.

At Facebook, Sandberg was instrumental in shifting the company’s focus toward a profitable advertising model. Her influence was immense, overseeing business operations, public policy, and communications. However, her tenure was not without significant friction. She faced intense scrutiny following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, including reports that she was personally blamed by Mark Zuckerberg for the fallout. In 2025, she faced legal sanctions for deleting emails related to that privacy scandal, which violated a litigation hold.

Beyond the boardroom, Sandberg became a cultural figure through her 2013 book, Lean In, which sparked a global debate on women in leadership. While it sold over a million copies, it drew criticism from voices like Marissa Orr and Vox Media for allegedly ignoring the structural barriers faced by working mothers. Her later work, including the book Option B and her documentary Screams Before Silence, reflects a shift toward themes of grief, resilience, and advocacy. Today, she continues to invest through Sandberg Bernthal Venture Partners, maintaining a net worth estimated at $2.4 billion as of July 2025.
