Organized by SWIFT, the event functions as a hybrid of an annual conference, exhibition, and networking hub. It is designed to bring together thousands of business leaders, decision-makers, and technical experts who manage the plumbing of the global financial ecosystem.

The history of Sibos reflects the globalization of finance. The first iteration took place in 1978 in Brussels. Since then, it has rotated through major hubs including Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin, Helsinki, Boston, Toronto, and Sydney. In recent years, the conference has expanded its footprint more regularly into Asia and Oceania, with frequent stops in China, Japan, Singapore, and the UAE.

The scale of the event is significant for industry coordination. While it typically sees an average annual turnout of over 7,000 participants, it reached a peak of about 11,500 attendees during its 2019 gathering in London. The conference has only been cancelled twice in its history, occurring in 2001 and 2020.

Rather than focusing on a single niche, Sibos addresses the broad pillars of modern finance. Attendees gather to discuss payments, securities, risk management, innovation, and trade. By providing a space for both exhibitors and participants to debate these issues, the event helps shape the standards and technologies that govern how money moves in an increasingly interconnected world.
