How Spain’s rapid economic boom became a cautionary tale

In 2006, Spain was on the verge of becoming a European powerhouse. This video examines the unsustainable growth that promised to overtake Germany, only to be dismantled by the global financial crisis.

At the start of the millennium, Spain experienced unprecedented expansion, with per capita output more than doubling in a six-year period. This surge led some economists to forecast that Spain might surpass Germany in per capita income within five years. The real estate sector was the engine of this era, driving such high demand for tradespeople that property agents became local celebrities.

The era of debt-fueled expansion ended abruptly with the global financial crisis and the subsequent Eurozone crisis. Nearly twenty years later, the economic scars remain visible: the economy is still weaker than it was in 2007, characterized by persistent debt, stagnant activity, and high unemployment.
