Stranger Things built a Netflix empire out of 1980s nostalgia
A boy vanishes from a small Indiana town in November 1983, and a girl with a shaved head and a number instead of a name escapes from the government lab nearby. From that premise the Duffer Brothers spun five seasons, record audiences, a stage play and an animated spin-off, all steeped in the pop culture of the 1980s.
The first season landed on Netflix in July 2016. Its setting, Hawkins, is described as the town where nothing ever happens, which is exactly why the local laboratory is so unsettling. Officially it does research for the Department of Energy; secretly it experiments with the paranormal, sometimes on people. One of those experiments tears open a passage to the Upside Down, a hostile mirror world that seeps into everyday life.
The Duffers set out to mix investigative drama with supernatural horror and a sense of childlike wonder. Their influences are worn openly: Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Stephen King, David Lynch and H. P. Lovecraft all echo through the show, alongside Cold War conspiracy theories about secret government programmes. The kids ride bikes, play Dungeons and Dragons and hang out at a shopping mall, and critics praised the atmosphere and acting as much as the homage.
Each season moves the calendar forward. The story runs from late 1983 through a summer centred on the Fourth of July in 1985, then to March 1986 and finally to November 1987, when the military has quarantined Hawkins. Along the way the ensemble, led by Winona Ryder, David Harbour and Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, grows up on screen.
Commercially the series became one of Netflix's flagships, drawing record viewing with each release. The final season arrived in three volumes in November and December 2025. By then the story had already expanded well beyond television, with a prequel stage play, The First Shadow, in 2023, books, comics and a pop-up shop, and an animated spin-off, Tales from '85, following in 2026.
