How Greece is navigating the long road from crisis to modern economic recovery

Greece is widely known for its Mediterranean charm and massive tourism industry, yet its 21st-century economic narrative is defined by a struggle to overcome a prolonged financial crisis. While the nation has recently outpaced the euro area, it now faces the complex challenge of sustaining growth through structural reform.

In recent years, the Greek economy has demonstrated resilience, showing signs of recovery that have allowed it to outpace the broader euro area. This progress is largely attributed to a combination of job creation, capital deepening, and the implementation of structural reforms. These efforts have begun to narrow the gap in GDP per capita between Greece and the most advanced OECD economies, marking a departure from the stagnation that characterized the country's earlier financial struggles.

Despite this recovery, significant hurdles remain. Productivity gains have been notably weak, hindered by a persistent investment gap. A large portion of the business landscape consists of smaller firms that struggle to innovate or integrate digital technologies into their operations. To maintain this momentum, the country must address these structural weaknesses. Experts suggest that improving access to finance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is essential to encourage investment in advanced technology and foster greater business dynamism.

Looking forward, the path to higher incomes and long-term stability requires a multifaceted approach. Safeguarding competitiveness while managing public debt necessitates a focus on sustaining employment gains and bolstering overall productivity. Addressing skill shortages is another critical priority, which could be achieved by increasing the labor force participation of women and enhancing training programs. Furthermore, removing remaining regulatory burdens is viewed as a key step toward strengthening competition and ensuring the economy remains on a sustainable, declining path for public debt.
