Is American global dominance actually fading, or is it just changing its shape?
The United States remains the world's wealthiest and most technologically advanced nation, yet its relative global influence is shifting. While absolute power continues to grow, the rise of other economies and changing trade dynamics have sparked a national debate about whether the country is in decline or simply evolving.
Since the early 20th century, the United States has maintained its position as the world's largest economy through industrial growth and innovation. Unlike the colonial empires of the past, which extracted wealth directly from foreign territories, the American model has relied on a central role in the global economy, the pervasive influence of the dollar, and a massive military presence. By 2025, the U.S. GDP reached $32.4 trillion, remaining 55% larger than China’s at current exchange rates.
However, dominance is a relative term. While America is stronger than ever by absolute measures, its share of global manufacturing has dropped from about 50% in 1945 to roughly 15% in 2024. China has surpassed the U.S. in manufacturing output and, when adjusted for local prices, now holds the title of the world's largest economy. Furthermore, the dollar’s share of global foreign-exchange reserves has gradually declined to 57%, signaling a shift in the financial landscape that once seemed unassailable.
The perception of decline is fueled by the reality that military might does not always translate into geopolitical success, as seen in recent conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran. Additionally, many Americans feel the post-war order has yielded diminishing returns for ordinary citizens. While the global economy has expanded 19-fold since 1945, the rise of other nations—buoyed by the very order America helped create—has made the world more multipolar. Whether this erosion of dominance is a flaw or a feature of a successful global system remains a central point of contention.
