Is the US stock market actually just seven massive tech companies in a trench coat?
Market performance in 2023 reached record levels of concentration. While the broader market remains stagnant, a handful of tech giants have seen explosive growth, fundamentally shifting the composition and influence of major indices like the S&P 500.
In 2023, the US stock market experienced its highest level of concentration ever recorded. Seven major tech firms—Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Tesla, and Meta—drove nearly all market gains, with individual rallies ranging from 35% to 210%.
This narrow leadership means that just five tech companies now account for nearly 25% of the S&P 500. The scale of these entities is staggering: Apple alone holds a market capitalization of $3.1 trillion, exceeding the combined value of all 2,000 companies listed in the Russell 2000 index. Meanwhile, the remaining 496 stocks in the S&P 500 have shown almost no movement.
