Modern Travelers operates through a sophisticated risk management strategy. Rather than dissolving acquired companies like St. Paul or USF&G, it keeps them as wholly owned subsidiaries. This allows the group to isolate specific risks; if one company faces a surge in claims, it can be placed in 'runoff' to complete its policies while the rest of the group remains unaffected. This structural safeguard has allowed the company to navigate complex mergers, including a high-profile stint within Citigroup and various international acquisitions in Brazil, Canada, and the UK.
