The high price of naturalism: Abdellatif Kechiche’s polarizing cinematic legacy
In short: From winning the Palme d'Or to facing intense allegations of labor violations and harassment, Abdellatif Kechiche embodies the volatile intersection of high art and grueling production. His career explores the immigrant experience through a naturalistic lens that has sparked both critical acclaim and profound ethical debates.
Born in Tunis and moving to France at age six, Kechiche built a foundation in theater before transitioning to film. His early career was marked by acting roles in works like 'The Innocents' (1987), but he gained significant recognition as a director with 'Games of Love and Chance' (2003). This film was notable for using amateur actors on a limited budget to depict Parisian suburban students, eventually winning four César Awards in 2005.
Kechiche’s reputation solidified with 'The Secret of the Grain' (2006) and the erotic-romance 'Blue Is the Warmest Colour' (2013). The latter won the Palme d'Or at the 66th Cannes Film Festival, but its success was shadowed by reports of unpaid overtime and harassment by technicians. While lead actresses Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos defended his vision as 'worth it' despite his difficult behavior, these controversies have defined the discourse surrounding his methods.
His recent work, the 'Mektoub, My Love' trilogy, highlights a shift toward extreme naturalism and financial instability. 'Intermezzo' (2019) faced severe backlash over a 13-minute unsimulated sex scene and allegations that Kechiche pressured actress Ophélie Bau to consume alcohol to complete it. Following his production company's insolvency and these allegations, the film remains unreleased worldwide as of 2025. Despite these hurdles, the trilogy's final chapter premiered at the 2024 Locarno Film Festival, even as Kechiche remained absent due to a recent stroke.
