The year the Academy officially rebranded the Oscars
In short: For 85 years, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held its prestigious gala under a formal title. In 2013, however, a strategic shift in marketing and production changed the brand forever. This ceremony marked the first time the industry officially adopted the shorthand name we use today.
The 85th Academy Awards, held on February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre, served as a pivotal branding moment. While the ceremony honored the best films of 2012, it was the first time in the Academy's 85-year history that the phrase "The Oscars" was used as the official name during both marketing and the broadcast. This transition was part of a broader effort to modernize the event's image. To achieve this, the Academy hired a new production team, including producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, following a period of declining viewership.
The ceremony was also defined by a push for creative freedom and high-profile hosting. Seth MacFarlane hosted the show for the first time, becoming the sixth person to host while simultaneously receiving a nomination (for Best Original Song for "Ted"). His performance was polarizing; while some critics praised his versatility and ability to puncture the event's pomposity, others condemned his "We Saw Your Boobs" musical number as misogynistic and inappropriate for a family audience. The Academy defended the choice as an exercise in creative freedom.
Technologically, the 85th ceremony introduced a digital voting system. Announced in January 2012, the electronic ballot was designed by Chief Operating Officer Ric Robertson to increase member participation and provide a backup for emergencies. Despite these official reasons, industry insiders speculated the move was a strategic attempt to shift the awards gala to a January timeframe. The event ultimately drew over 40 million viewers in the United States, marking a 3% increase from the previous year.
