How the French Spider-Man scales the world's tallest skyscrapers without any safety equipment.
In short: Alain Robert, known as the French Spider-Man, climbs the world's most iconic skyscrapers using only his hands and feet. Often operating without permission, he relies on extreme physical training to navigate window ledges and frames. His daring, unauthorized ascents have led to numerous arrests across the globe for decades.
Born in 1962, Alain Robert has built a career as an urban climber by scaling landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Burj Khalifa, and the Sydney Opera House. His technique relies on identifying small protrusions on building facades, such as window frames or ledges, to pull himself upward. While he occasionally uses chalk for grip, he typically eschews ropes or harnesses, performing his ascents free solo. This physical discipline is grueling; some climbs, such as his 2004 ascent of the 508-meter Taipei 101, have lasted up to four hours.
Robert’s relationship with authorities is complex. Many of his climbs are performed surreptitiously, leading to frequent arrests by law enforcement waiting at the summit. However, his reputation has also turned him into a publicity asset. He has been paid to scale buildings for corporate promotions, such as the 2003 Lloyd's building climb to market the Spider-Man film, and he has occasionally received official permission for high-profile events, including his 2003 ascent of the National Bank of Abu Dhabi.
Beyond mere spectacle, Robert has used his climbs to draw attention to social causes. In 2008 and 2009, he scaled buildings in New York and London to highlight global warming, unfurling banners to broadcast his message. Despite the risks and legal consequences—which have included jail time and permanent injunctions—he continues to seek out new challenges, such as his 2018 climb of the 123-storey Lotte World Tower in Seoul. His career remains a blend of athletic endurance, civil disobedience, and performance art.
