From Cartoonist Aspirations to a Broadway Debut and Weather Records
In short: Before he became a staple of morning television, Al Roker dreamed of being a cartoonist. His journey from a Syracuse radio DJ to a Broadway actor and record-breaking weathercaster reveals a career built on versatility, physical endurance, and a knack for capturing the national attention.
Al Roker's career is defined by its breadth across multiple media. Born in Queens to parents of Jamaican and Bahamian descent, he initially pursued art before becoming a broadcaster. He began his professional weather career in 1974 at WHEN-TV in Syracuse while still a student at SUNY Oswego. His rise through the ranks included stints in Washington, D.C., and Cleveland before he joined NBC's flagship WNBC-TV in late 1983. By early 1996, following Willard Scott's semi-retirement, Roker secured the regular weekday weather slot on Today, where his studio remote forecasts became a signature element of the program.
Roker has consistently pushed the boundaries of broadcast journalism through endurance feats and public service. In November 2014, he performed 'Rokerthon,' a non-stop 34-hour weather forecast to benefit the military and USO. He followed this with 'Rokerthon 2' in 2015, reporting from all 50 states for Feeding America, and 'Rokerthon 3' in 2017, where he set a Guinness World Record by visiting various colleges to perform stunts like an ice conga line. Beyond the weather desk, he has hosted game shows on MSNBC and NBC, appeared as a celebrity player on Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, and even transitioned into musical theater with Broadway debuts in 2018 and 2019.
Despite his public persona, Roker's career has been marked by significant personal health challenges. He underwent multiple major surgeries, including total knee arthoplasty in 2001, a back operation in 2005, a hip replacement in 2019, and emergency carpal tunnel surgery in 2018. In late 2022, he faced life-threatening complications involving blood clots in his lungs, internal bleeding, and multiple surgeries including a colon resection and gallbladder removal. His resilience in returning to the Today Show on January 6, 2023, underscores the physical demands of his long-standing role as a public figure.
