From medical studies to the pinnacle of European cinema
In short: Before she became a celebrated face of Italian cinema, Alba Rohrwacher was training to be a doctor. This pivot from medicine to the arts shaped a career defined by prestigious awards and intimate collaborations with her sister, director Alice Rohrwacher.
Alba Caterina Rohrwacher was born in Florence in 1979 to a German father and an Italian mother. Her early path was not set toward the spotlight; from the ages of 17 to 21, she studied medicine with the intention of practicing as a doctor. It was only at age 21 that she relocated to Rome to pursue acting at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia.
Her transition into film began in 2004 with An Italian Romance. Since then, her trajectory has been marked by significant critical acclaim in Italy and abroad. She secured her first David di Donatello for Best Supporting Actress in 2008, followed by the Best Actress award in 2009 for her role in Pupi Avati's Giovanna's Father. That same year, she received the Shooting Stars Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
A defining element of her career is her creative partnership with her younger sister, director Alice Rohrwacher. In 2014, the pair joined forces for the semi-autobiographical movie The Wonders, featuring Alba in a part inspired by their mother, before reuniting for Happy as Lazzaro, which debuted at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. The series My Brilliant Friend featured Rohrwacher's voice, and she additionally acted as a judge for the Cannes, Berlin, and Venice film festivals.
Beyond her acting, Rohrwacher has engaged in high-profile brand partnerships, such as an advertising campaign for the jewelry brand Pomellato in 2020. Her career reflects a balance of independent artistic collaboration and mainstream recognition, moving from the clinical world of medicine to the nuanced world of narrative storytelling.
