From a Neapolitan studio to an Emmy-nominated breakout role
In short: Simona Tabasco’s rise in the film industry illustrates the high-stakes gamble of early career choices. By prioritizing a demanding television role over her formal education, she traded academic stability for a breakout performance that eventually landed her on one of the world's most prestigious lists of young influencers.
Simona Tabasco's professional trajectory began in 2013 after she filmed two short projects at the Giffoni Film Festival. This led to her first major television role in the Italian teen drama Fuoriclasse, which premiered in March 2014. However, the commitment to the production caused her to miss significant classes at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, resulting in her eventual expulsion from the prestigious film school. She is the daughter of an office worker and a graphic designer who works in advertising. Her twin brother is named Marco. She was born in Naples on April 5, 1994.
Despite the academic setback, 2014 marked a pivotal year for her career. The 2015 Nastro d'Argento awards saw her receive the Premio Guglielmo Biraghi for depicting the lead's child in the neo-noir movie Perez, her first on-screen appearance. She continued to build a steady presence in Italian media, notably starring in the long-running medical drama Doc – Nelle tue mani starting in 2020. She portrayed a Muslim girl named Aida Merlissi in her first television project. This work followed her initial short film experiences.
International fame arrived for Tabasco in 2022, following her involvement in the second season of The White Lotus, an HBO anthology series. Playing a sex worker in Sicily, her performance was described by critics as a breakout moment characterized by infectious energy. This role secured her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 2023 and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her work with the ensemble cast. Her rapid ascent was further validated in March 2023 when Forbes included her in its annual 30 Under 30 list for influential Europeans. She was cast in the psychological horror film Immaculate in early 2023. Most recently, in May 2024, she joined a project called Cloud One.
