American Dad! began as its creators' way of venting about the 2000 election
Seth MacFarlane and Matt Weitzman were so frustrated after the 2000 US presidential election that they poured it into a cartoon about a conservative spy and his left-leaning daughter. American Dad! debuted after Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005 and has since been renewed through a twenty-fifth season.
Fox ordered a pilot presentation in September 2003, and the show became the first series built specifically for its Animation Domination block. The pilot aired on February 6, 2005, straight after the Super Bowl, but the rest of the opening season waited until May 1. The comedy follows the Smiths of Langley Falls, a town named after Langley and Great Falls in Virginia: Stan, a Republican CIA agent; his wife Francine; their hippie daughter Hayley; and their nerdy son Steve.
The household gets stranger. Klaus is a goldfish carrying the brain of an East German athlete, implanted after a fictional 1986 Winter Olympics. Roger is an alien Stan rescued from Area 51, a hedonistic master of disguise who wears costumes to hide from Stan's boss, CIA deputy director Avery Bullock. Hayley's boyfriend, later husband, Jeff Fischer joined the main cast in season seven, voiced by an actor who shares his name, and Rogu, Roger's son born from a tumour, arrived in season fifteen. MacFarlane voices both Stan and Roger.
Timing made the early years awkward. The show was partly meant to fill the gap left by the cancelled Family Guy, yet that series was revived just three months after the debut. Some critics dismissed the newcomer as an imitation, and a Washington Post writer branded it disappointing before its full premiere. MacFarlane left day-to-day direction mostly to Mike Barker and Weitzman, and the series leaned less on cutaway gags and more on its oddball characters.
It moved to TBS for its twelfth season in 2014, stayed there through season 21 in March 2025, and returned to Fox on February 22, 2026. Along the way it drew four Primetime Emmy nominations and two Annie nominations, and in June 2013 the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers named it top television series.
