Tracey Ullman shorts became TV's longest scripted run
Matt Groening sketched a dysfunctional clan for James L. Brooks, naming them after his own relatives and swapping Bart for himself. Shorts debuted on The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987; the half-hour Fox series launched December 17, 1989. Hundreds of episodes later it still holds U.S. records for animated and primetime scripted longevity.
Matt Groening invented the household for producer James L. Brooks, borrowing relatives' names and inserting Bart in place of his own because Simpson echoed simpleton in a way he found funny. Animated bumpers arrived on The Tracey Ullman Show on 19 April 1987; Groening, Brooks, and Sam Simon then stretched them into a Fox half-hour that began 17 December 1989. By now 809 episodes have aired, enough to claim U.S. records for animated runs, sitcoms, and scripted primetime longevity, with a 2007 theatrical movie extending the brand.
Fictional Springfield hosts Homer at the nuclear plant, Marge holding the home together, Bart the prankster, Lisa the overachiever, and Maggie the baby. Seasons from the early 1990s earned golden-age praise; later chapters draw decline complaints even while Time magazine crowned the series the twentieth century's finest television. Birthdays pass yet nobody ages, and the town's terrain flips among coast, desert, and farmland as jokes demand. Groening compares the place to Portland, Oregon, without ever fixing a state on the map.
Brooks won a Fox contract line that blocked network meddling with scripts. Early Ullman shorts from Klasky Csupo simply traced Groening's rough pencils, freezing the crude outlines fans still know, and colourist Gyorgyi Peluce made everyone yellow because hairless children looked odd in flesh tones. A sprawling secondary cast, echoing SCTV's ensemble habit, turned one family gag into a flexible cartoon America able to needle each new decade while the children stay ten forever.
