André the Giant was a global pop culture icon and a master of wrestling
In short: Born in France with gigantism, André René Roussimoff became a worldwide phenomenon known as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Beyond his legendary wrestling career and iconic role in The Princess Bride, his life was defined by immense physical challenges, a relentless touring schedule, and a complex, carefully managed public persona.
Born in 1946 with acromegaly, André René Roussimoff displayed remarkable size from childhood, standing over six feet tall by age twelve. After leaving school at fourteen to work on a farm, he moved to Paris at eighteen to train as a professional wrestler. His promoter, Robert Lageat, recognized the commercial potential of his stature, billing him as Géant Ferré. By the 1970s, he had become a roving special attraction, traveling globally to maintain his mystique and prevent overexposure.
His career reached its zenith in the World Wrestling Federation under Vince McMahon. Portrayed as an immovable monster, he was famously paired with manager Bobby Heenan and engaged in a career-defining feud with Hulk Hogan. Their match at WrestleMania III in 1987 remains a landmark event, though the narrative surrounding it often obscures reality. While fans believed Hogan’s bodyslam was unprecedented, Roussimoff had been slammed by others years earlier; he agreed to the loss primarily due to the severe physical toll of his condition. By this time, his health was declining, and he required back surgery and a brace to perform.
Roussimoff’s influence extended beyond the ring into cinema, most notably as Fezzik in the 1987 film The Princess Bride. Despite his fame, his life was marked by constant pain and the logistical difficulties of his size. He was the inaugural inductee into the WWF Hall of Fame following his death in 1993. Today, he is remembered not just as a wrestler, but as a singular figure whose professional life was a calculated blend of athletic prowess, storytelling, and the management of a body that was both his greatest asset and his most significant burden.
