How a wrestling giant transformed a persona to find financial fortune
In short: Robert James Marella began his career as a singing Italian American athlete. However, he soon discovered that fans preferred monsters over musicians. By inventing a terrifying, blood-drinking beast from Manchuria, he unlocked a massive windfall and left an indelible mark on professional wrestling history.
Born in 1937, Robert James 'Gino' Marella was a formidable athlete long before he became a household name. A standout at Ithaca College, he was a second-place finisher in the 1959 NCAA Wrestling Championships and held several school records, including an 18-second pin. Standing 6'5", his massive frame—which reached up to 440 pounds at certain points—made him a natural for the ring.
Initially performing as the 'babyface' Gino Marella, he relied on singing in Italian to engage crowds. Realizing that 'outlandish monster heel gimmicks' were far more lucrative, he underwent a complete reinvention. He adopted the persona of Gorilla Monsoon, a terrifying giant from Manchuria who supposedly traveled with a gypsy caravan, ate raw meat, and drank the blood of his victims. This shift proved incredibly successful, turning him into a top-tier villain and a major financial success.
Beyond his time as a wrestler, Marella became the definitive 'voice' of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) during the 1980s and 1990s. Alongside Jesse 'The Body' Ventura, he established the gold standard for wrestling commentary. His influence even extended behind the scenes; the staging area behind the entrance curtain, where officials prepare for matches, is known globally as the 'Gorilla Position' in his honor.
Marella's life was marked by both immense professional heights and profound personal tragedy. He was a shareholder in the WWWF and a close confidant to Vince McMahon, yet he endured the loss of his son, Joey, in a 1994 car accident. He passed away in 1999 from complications of diabetes, leaving behind a legacy as both a legendary performer and a foundational pillar of the industry.
