Anjelica Huston: From Reluctant Debutante to Hollywood’s Most Elegant and Tough-Minded Matriarch
In short: Born into a cinematic dynasty, Anjelica Huston initially struggled to find her footing under her father's demanding direction. After a detour into high-fashion modeling, she reinvented herself as a powerhouse character actress, eventually securing an Academy Award and becoming a defining, flinty presence in the whimsical films of Wes Anderson.
Born in 1951 to director John Huston and ballerina Enrica Soma, Anjelica Huston spent much of her childhood in the secluded Irish countryside. Her early exposure to the film industry was fraught; she made her screen debut in her father’s 1969 film A Walk with Love and Death, a performance that was widely panned. The experience left her disillusioned, and she spent much of the 1970s working as a model for photographers like Richard Avedon and David Bailey.
A 1980 car accident served as a turning point, galvanizing her to pursue acting with renewed focus. She began taking lessons and securing supporting roles, eventually landing the part of Maerose Prizzi in the 1985 film Prizzi’s Honor. Directed by her father and co-starring Jack Nicholson, the role earned her an Academy Award for best supporting actress. This success launched a prolific career defined by her ability to portray complex, self-sufficient women, from the Grand High Witch in The Witches to the drolly dolorous Morticia Addams.
Beyond her acting, Huston has explored directing, helming projects like Bastard out of Carolina and Agnes Browne. In the 21st century, she became a staple of Wes Anderson’s filmography, appearing in works such as The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Her later career has seen her move seamlessly between television series like Smash and Transparent, and blockbuster films like John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum, cementing her legacy as a versatile and enduring force in modern cinema.
