How an Indian actress transitioned from modeling to becoming a celebrated cinematic force
In short: Anjali, an Indian actress born in 1986, has built a career defined by performance-oriented roles across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema. From her early modeling days to winning multiple Filmfare Awards South, she has navigated the complexities of the film industry, proving her versatility in both critical and commercial hits.
Born in Razole, Andhra Pradesh, Anjali entered the film industry after a stint in modeling. Her parents, who held aspirations of acting themselves, saw their dreams realized through her career. Although her initial attempts to break into cinema in 2002 with director Kalanjiyam were unsuccessful due to projects failing to materialize, she eventually debuted in the 2006 Telugu thriller Photo. Her true breakthrough arrived in 2007 with the Tamil film Kattradhu Thamizh, where her portrayal of Anandhi earned her the Vijay Award for Best Debut Actress.
Anjali’s reputation as a formidable talent was solidified by her performance as Kani in the 2010 film Angadi Theru. To prepare for the role of a sales girl, she and the cast worked in a real textile store on Ranganathan Street, wearing uniforms and selling goods to unsuspecting customers. This commitment to realism helped the film achieve rave reviews and earned her the first of two consecutive Filmfare Awards for Best Actress in Tamil cinema. She later proved her range in 2014 by winning a Nandi Award for her role in the horror-comedy Geethanjali.
Throughout her career, Anjali has balanced high-budget commercial successes with smaller, character-driven dramas. While her role in the 2011 blockbuster Mankatha was minor, her performance in the same year’s Engaeyum Eppothum was widely praised by critics, who noted her ability to steal scenes. Despite occasional setbacks and films that failed to find an audience, she has remained a consistent presence, appearing in diverse projects ranging from the 2021 hit Vakeel Saab, which grossed over ₹137.65 crore, to the 2024 premiere of Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai at the Rotterdam Film Festival.
