A superhero with a pastry for a head became Japan's most profitable cultural icon.
In short: Born from the creator's wartime memories of starvation, Anpanman is a Japanese superhero whose head is a bean-filled bun. Despite his unusual anatomy, he has dominated the Japanese market for decades, surpassing Hello Kitty in revenue and holding a world record for the sheer volume of characters in his franchise.
The franchise began in 1973 as a picture book series by Takashi Yanase, who drew inspiration from his own experiences facing hunger during the Second World War. His protagonist, Anpanman, is a selfless hero who protects the world from Baikinman, an anthropomorphic germ. The character's unique design—a head made of anpan, or red bean paste pastry—allows him to sustain himself without eating, though he frequently offers parts of his own head to feed those in need.
The series evolved into a massive media empire, with the anime adaptation Soreike! Anpanman becoming a staple for Japanese children. By 2002, Anpanman overtook Hello Kitty as the nation's top-grossing character, a position he maintained through 2019. The franchise's commercial reach is vast, covering everything from snack foods to video games, and it had generated ¥4.5 trillion in total retail sales by 2013. Its cultural impact is so significant that it has even influenced other works, such as the manga and anime series One-Punch Man.
Beyond his commercial success, Anpanman is a record-breaking feat of world-building. In 2009, Guinness verified the franchise for featuring the largest cast of characters in an animated series, with 1,768 unique figures appearing across the first 980 television episodes and 20 films. This expansive roster, combined with the moral dualism between the hero and his germ-based nemesis, has led some media experts to compare the series' thematic depth to works as varied as Milton's Paradise Lost and Star Trek.
