In short: Before the Super Nintendo could render 3D worlds, it lacked the raw power to do so. Enter Argonaut Games. They didn't just write the code; they engineered the custom silicon that turned a 16-bit console into a pioneer of three-dimensional space.

Founded in 1982 by teenager Jez San, Argonaut Games became a pivotal architect of early 3D gaming. Their influence began as early as 1986 with Starglider, a title widely regarded as the first 3D video game. This technical foundation led to a landmark collaboration with Nintendo. To bring the 'nesGlider' prototype—later known as Star Fox—to life, Nintendo commissioned Argonaut to design custom hardware. This resulted in the Super FX RISC processor, which was so powerful that developers joked the Super NES was merely a box designed to house the chip.

The company's technical reach extended far beyond Nintendo. They developed several unreleased chips for various platforms, including designs for Philips, Apple, Toshiba, and Hasbro's 'virtual reality' systems. They even built a full-color VR headset for Nintendo before the Virtual Boy existed. Central to their legacy was 'BRender,' a proprietary 3D engine that powered hits like Croc: Legend of the Gobbos and was eventually released as free, open-source software in 2022.

Despite these achievements, the company faced a turbulent history. After a period of expansion and the acquisition of studios like Just Add Monsters (which became Ninja Theory), financial distress led to liquidation in 2004. The studio was officially dissolved in 2007, but the legacy endured. In 2024, Jez San relaunched Argonaut Games as a boutique publisher, focusing on remastering their classic franchises and investing in new independent titles.
