Asha Parekh: From Bollywood's Jubilee Girl to a Trailblazing Censor Board Chairperson
In short: Born in 1942, Asha Parekh became one of Hindi cinema's most celebrated stars, earning the title of Jubilee Girl for her string of hits. Beyond her electrifying dance moves and acting accolades, she navigated complex roles in production, philanthropy, and as the first woman to chair India's film censorship board.
Asha Parekh’s career began as a child actor in the 1952 film Maa, but her path to stardom was not immediate. After early setbacks, she was cast in the 1959 hit Dil Deke Dekho, marking the start of a prolific association with director Nasir Hussain. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, she dominated the box office, appearing in over 85 films including Teesri Manzil and Kati Patang, the latter earning her a Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Critics and peers alike noted her evolution from a glamour girl to a substantial actor capable of unconventional roles.
Her influence extended well beyond the screen. Between 1998 and 2001, she served as the first female chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Her tenure was marked by high-profile controversies, including debates over the release of films like Fire, Zakhm, and Elizabeth. Parekh maintained that her objective was to balance censorship guidelines with artistic freedom, resisting both radicalism and dictatorship while navigating intense public and political pressure.
Parekh’s life outside of film was defined by deep personal commitments. She never married, choosing to focus on caretaking for her parents and managing the BCJ General Hospital, which she founded in memory of her mother. Despite her immense success, she faced significant personal struggles, including bouts of depression following her parents' deaths. Today, she remains a revered figure in Indian culture, recognized for her contributions to cinema and her enduring dedication to the arts and social welfare.
