The first Gujarati actress to win a National Film Award
In short: Manasi Parekh’s journey from a reality TV finalist to a national award winner highlights a unique cultural bridge between Mumbai's entertainment hub and Gujarat's cinematic identity. Her career reflects a steady evolution from television stardom to becoming a pioneering figure in Gujarati cinema.
Born and raised in Mumbai, Manasi Parekh maintains a deep cultural connection to her Gujarati roots. This duality has defined her professional trajectory, allowing her to navigate both mainstream Indian television and regional Gujarati cinema. Her early interest in the arts was evident during her school years, leading her to participate in events that eventually paved the way for a multi-faceted career as an actress, singer, producer, and content creator.
Parekh's path to recognition was marked by significant milestones in reality television and serial acting. In 2003, she was one of eight finalists on Channel V's Pop Star (Season 2), appearing alongside Ayushman Khurrana. She later won Zee TV's singing reality show Star Ya Rockstar. Her transition into acting began with the serial Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi in 2004, followed by a breakout role in India Calling in 2005. These early successes provided a platform for her to appear in various high-profile shows and films, including the Tamil romance film Leelai in 2012.
The most significant turning point in Parekh's career occurred as she expanded into production and regional cinema. Her production career began in 2019 via Do Not Disturb, a Gujarati web series, before she entered Gujarati film in 2020 with Golkeri. Her portrayal of Monghi in the film Kutch Express ultimately earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress at the 70th National Film Awards in 2024. This achievement made her the first Gujarati actress to receive such an honor, solidifying her status as a trailblazer in Indian cinema.
