How an Iranian actor became a global icon of the silver screen
In short: Behrouz Vossoughi rose from humble beginnings to define Iranian cinema, evolving from a brooding local star into a pioneer of international co-productions. His career, spanning decades of acclaim and high-profile collaborations, remains a testament to his enduring influence on both domestic storytelling and the global film landscape.
Born in 1937 in Khoy, Behrouz Vossoughi moved to Tehran during his teenage years, eventually launching a prolific career that touched radio, theatre, and television. He first gained widespread attention in 1962 with roles in films like Toofan dar Shahre Ma. However, it was his 1969 performance as the brooding hero in Masoud Kimiai’s revenge drama Qeysar that cemented his status as a major star. This role earned him a Best Actor award at the Sepas Film Festival, marking the start of a legendary partnership with Kimiai that produced classics like Dash Akol in 1971 and The Deer in 1974.
Vossoughi’s versatility allowed him to transcend borders. He was among the first Iranian actors to secure roles in major American and European co-productions. His international filmography includes appearances alongside stars like Anthony Quinn in the 1978 film Caravans, as well as roles in The Invincible Six and the 1981 production Sphinx. These projects showcased his ability to command the screen in diverse cultural contexts, further elevating his reputation beyond the Iranian film industry.
His impact has been recognized globally through numerous accolades. In 1974, he received the Best Actor Award at the International Film Festival of India, and in 2006, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Perhaps most notably, in 2000, director Abbas Kiarostami chose to gift his own Akira Kurosawa Prize to Vossoughi, citing his profound contribution to Iranian cinema. Today, Vossoughi continues to engage with the craft, serving as a judge on the Persian Talent Show and maintaining his legacy as a titan of the arts.
