The Iranian actor who famously transformed into a cow on the silver screen
In short: Ezzatolah Entezami was a titan of Iranian cinema, celebrated for his profound ability to inhabit complex characters. His career spanned decades, evolving from early stage work to iconic film roles. He remains best remembered for a transformative debut performance that cemented his status as a legend of the national screen.
Born in 1924, Ezzatolah Entezami began his artistic journey on the stage in 1941. His formal training culminated in 1958 when he graduated from a theatre and cinema school in Hanover, Germany. By 1969, he transitioned into film, marking the start of a prolific career that would see him collaborate with the most significant directors in Iran, including Darius Mehrjui, Ali Hatami, and Rakhshan Bani-Etemad.
His breakthrough arrived with the 1969 film The Cow, directed by Darius Mehrjui. Entezami delivered a haunting performance as a simple villager who, unable to process the death of his beloved animal, descends into a psychological state where he adopts the identity of the cow itself. This role became a defining moment in his career, showcasing a raw, immersive acting style that would define his later work. He was eventually recognized as one of the five most influential figures in the history of Iranian cinema, alongside peers like Ali Nasirian and Jamshid Mashayekhi.
Throughout his life, Entezami’s contributions were widely honored. He secured the Crystal Simorgh for Best Actor twice at the International Fajr Film Festival for his performances in Grand Cinema and The Day of Angel. His legacy extended beyond his own acting, as his son, Majid Entezami, became a prominent film score composer. In 2006, the Iran cultural center in Paris held a special event to recognize his lifetime of accomplishments. He remained active in the industry until his final film role in 2011, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be studied as the gold standard of Iranian dramatic performance.
